So! The 2024 tour has wrapped up, and we’ve finished collating the stats and figures.
A huge shout-out to Michael Varrow for stepping up to compile the tour standings - it literally wouldn’t have happened without him.
Coming into the weekend, there seemed to only be a certain number of possible scenarios. In the mixed divison, that all changed when with less than 24 hours to go, Joe O’Brien registered for the event. Suddenly, everything except for the overall title was to play for - and Joe took full advantage.
Shooting a 1031 rated Quarry Park round after some less illustrious play at Gilly’s on the sunday, Joe moved up all the way into second place overall.
Quarry Park local Ben Holding was able to hang on to third place from Iain McDougall by just two points in the end!
In the Female division, it was also everything to play for. Coming into the weekend, Rachel Turton was sitting in the top spot despite only playing three events due to an extensive Scottish and International tour. However, it was Elva Preston, in her break-out season - who was able to capture enough points at the finale. Melodie Zehnder held onto third place despite this weekend’s overall best Female performance belonging to Sue Underwood.
There were also a bunch of other interesting statistics from this year’s tour. While total unique players were pretty stagnant from 2023 at 400 (-0.9%), Overall entries were pretty significantly up, by 15.8% - defying the overall downtrend in Disc Golf participation globally. This 1214 entries was made up of around 10% female entries, which should be a target for continued improvement for the tour going forward - although it certainly was encoraging at times to see multiple cards of ladies in the same divisions!
The “gut feeling” of the fact that there were many more people “Playing the tour” this year is backed up by the statistic that 62 players played 6 or more events this year. While this stat was not tracked last year, the total participation numbers being up by such a significant margin surely is allayed with this concept.
