Registration opens on January 1st

Am I right in thinking that although I could register for Open (MPO), Masters (MPM) or Am (MA1), that because my rating is less than 900 I can't try to register until 29th Jan?

Yes or no, depending on semantics.
All players can fill in the registration form from January 1st, and that will give the best chance of getting a place. So you can go through the registration process, but if your rating is below 900 you will go on a waiting list. Come January 29th you will move to the list of registered players if there is sufficient space left. That's how I read it.
