Iceland v GB - April 30-May 12016

Post by Charlie Mead » Tue Jan 26, 2016 6:06 pm

Dear All GB Disc Golfers,

We have received an invitation - a challenge even - to take on the best of Icelandic Disc Golfers in Iceland!

Bogi is thinking something along the lines of 3 Open players (920+ rated), 2 Advanced Ams, 1 Master, 1 Woman and perhaps a Junior.

Bogi and Haukur are putting together an attractive package to encourage us to visit them on the weekend of April 30th - May 1st. The idea being we would fly to Iceland on Thursday/Friday April 28th/29th and return Monday May 2nd which is Bank Holiday in the UK.

Haukur has a Guest House and offers the following - "So I have a quote based on 8 people sharing a large flat with double beds and the option of mattresses on the floor for those unwilling to share beds. The price per person is £20 per night +5£ for breakfast. A low additional fee for those who insist on private rooms."

They will also book and schedule flights and pick us up/return to airport. Price of flights yet to be worked out but Flying with W0W Air out of Gatwick.

Let me know if you are interested in representing GB and are able to go at this time. I will be talking to the Board about the need for criteria for selection should there be a huge rush and take advice on how best to put together the strongest team possible.

NB: Iceland are bringing 14 players over for Croydon Cyclone - impressive indeed.

Just had this from Bogi :

"For a 12.20 outbound flight on Thur and a 6.45 inbound one on Mon with a 12kg carry-on the price per traveller is 140 GBP at the moment".

So the whole weekend would cost £220 for flights and accommodation - which is a really good price for Iceland. BUT - double that for beers and food!!!!

Beer and food in Iceland does not have to be so expensive. Key thing is to buy beer at dutyfree when arriving, there 0.5 liter beer is about 1.30 pounds
Also, Bogi will work out a deal at a pub downtown, so that will not be too bad.
As for food, you will have access to a kitchen [bruce edit: lol, over eager anti-spam measure! This says "ki tch en"] to prepare yourselves, we will arrange some food at the tournament at a fair price, and a decent burger can be found at reasonable prices all over. And....actually....I do not feel food is cheap when I travel to the UK....

With only two offers of joining a team to play Iceland on the weekend of April 30-May 1 Bogi and Haukur have offered the following wekend as an alternative.

So, May 7th and 8th is the new date. Do you want to play? The same arrangements apply though suggest that the team fly out on the Friday and back early Monday morning.

If you are interested - please let me know.

I would love to visit Iceland...Plymouth Open...Mothers day...damn, could possibly miss Plymouth but not Mothers Day. Plus probably not up to their standards but sounds like a good excuse to visit Iceland!
