Isle of Mull Disc Golf Classic - March 26-27 2016

Post by Charlie Mead » Tue Jun 09, 2015 4:07 pm

Dear All Disc Golfers and fellow travellers,

This is part of a mail sent me by Jonny Morris which is a timely prompt for everyone to start thinking about Mull and an early Easter next year. The tournament will be on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th March 2016 with Easter Monday being a bank holiday. Accommodation on Mull will also be a bit tighter because this Easter coincides with Mull Eagle Watch. So book your accommodation as soon as possible. Information on the bunkhouse beds will be with you in a few weeks - this is being run by us and Emmaleigh will only take bookings from us directly with a paid deposit.

The good news from Jonny was on the Ferry costs. Reduced by over 75% on Oban/Craignure route for cars with up to 4 passengers - this is a great saving but don't book before October!

Quote " From October 2015 we (Island Holiday Cottages) are getting the Road Equivalent Tariff for our ferry prices which is excellent news both for residents and visitors to the Isle of Mull, it does mean that holiday properties are booking up early for next year if you come regularly to a property and would like me to reserve it for you for 2016 please send me an email and I will do that for you. I am happy to hold the property without deposit for 1 month. Most holiday properties are the same price as 2015 for 2016.

Here is the table detailing the new lower fares which are reduced by about 75% on this years prices

Route RET passenger fare RET car fare

Oban / Craignure £3.45 £13.00

Lochaline / Fishnish £2.50 £6.90

Fionnphort / Iona £1.70 £6.05

I realize that not everyone will be coming back to Mull next year but I do know some of you are regular visitors and wouldn’t want to miss out on your accommodation and if you have already booked then your ferry will be a lot cheaper next year.

Kind regards

Hylda

Absolutely. Mull has always been at Easter to allow southerners time to get there on Good Friday and Home on Easter Monday if they have to get to work - rather than staying for a few days!!

Hope to make it this year as planning lambing later in April.

Mull started off being at Easter, but then had a spell of being on the May Bank holiday, and personally I think that is a better date, especially if Easter is early. A few weeks makes quite a difference in the weather, and more especially nature puts on a fantastic Spring show in late April and Early May as the trees come into leaf and flowers bloom. In March the stage is bare and we miss the show :(
I realise that time off work is the main driver for this, and it's the TD's call, but I just wanted to put a word in for the quality of the experience in terms of the comfort and aesthetics.

Del,

Good point and well made. However, for this coming year, 2016, it will definitely be at Easter. We have a commitment to the Northern Flights back-to-back as well as Mull itself but always happy to consider other options in years to come. If enough players let me know this is a better option then I will consider but then they will have to make sure they have accommodation booked further in advance as May bank Holiday is official start of the holiday season on Mull.

Thanks anyway.

Disc Zoo and Fanmore Discgolf is pleased to Host the
24th Isle of Mull Classic
26th and 27th March 2016

Download your Invitation here.

Fanmore, Isle of Mull, PA73 6LX, Scotland.

Tournament Director Charlie Mead

This year sees the 24th Isle of Mull Disc Golf Championships. As last year the event will be on the Easter holiday weekend, this year at the end of March giving all players more opportunity and flexibility in coming to this beautiful island, visiting its wonders and playing at this long established event on the BDGA Tour. We will be combining with Burnlaw the following weekend to make this another Northern Flights special – a chance to play two of the northernmost BDGA Tour events on back to back weekends.

This event is ripe with history – from its inception in 1981 through to the first event in 1992, moving from snow posts to baskets, surviving the foot and mouth year and where many overseas players as well as Tour players have graced the slopes of Gremlin’s Croft. And this year will repeat the full European Championship course set up with tee-mats, new tee-signs and maximum exposure for the event.

The course at Fanmore is set over steep croft land, with outstandingly beautiful coastal and mountain views all around, and totally exposed to the weather. There are few trees, but with the elevation changes and wind, the course provides a huge challenge to players, the likes of which you will not experience anywhere else on the British Tour. Once again we offer every player four rounds over both 18 hole courses - the Classic 18 and the Up and Over Course; as well as the 8th Mull Masters Division Championship!

Mull is established as an essential part of the BDGA Tour. The opportunity to visit one of Scotland’s most beautiful islands - to experience the hospitality of locals, their food, drink and generosity as well as play a few holes of golf – should not be missed.
It is a great location for an extended break with family and friends – it would be great to see more this year! And the chance to win Gremlin’s Chutney is open to everyone!

Keep up to date with what is happening on the BDGA Forum ‘Mull’ thread as well as the Mull website http://www.mulldiscgolf.org.uk This will give you all you need to know about the course - Maps, Holes, Descriptions and the rich history of this event in a pictorial trip through The Book of Mull.

Format

6 hole final for the top 5 in the Open, Masters and Amateur divisions – Intermediate and Advanced
Prizes shall be awarded to Division winners and top Woman, Junior Junior, Junior and Girl.

As we move on from Burns Night to the end of January the traditional time to book your holidays approaches - so please make sure you register for Mull if you are intending to come. I have heard a lot of players are intending to make the trip to The Northern Flights but you need to tell me as well!!

Take care and happy planning.

Sorry I will not be attending, my plans for that particular weekend were forged 20 years ago as it is our wedding anniversary, looking forward to '17.

We have a player in London - Nick Norena - looking for help with getting to the Mull tournament. I have suggested to him that he gets the train to Oban and looks to hook up with someone travelling onto the island there - can anyone help him out?

Also, Charlie, is there any room in the bunk house for him?

Just a note for everyone coming to Mull - BST starts on Sunday 27th March - so you lose an hours sleep but gain an hours daylight! Good news if the weather is harsh, dark and grey!
