BDGA#7 - The Lancashire Hotshot - 20th/21st June 2015

Post by Jaime » Mon Mar 16, 2015 3:09 pm

Hi all,

Just thought I would open up the thread for the event at Myerscough College.

The event is at:

Myerscough College,
St. Michael’s Road,
Bilsborrow,
Preston,
PR3 0RY

TD is Chris OB; with myself (Jaime Martin) and Alison Northrop as ATD slaves.

At this stage, there is a lot to sort out still but I know some of you like to get sorted with accommodation etc so here is some basic info:

Nearby Hotels
A number of different accommodation options are available but book early to avoid disappointment.
There are a couple of hotels within walking distance of the college:

Guy's Thatched Hamlet http://www.guysthatchedhamlet.co.uk/
Premier Inn (North Preston) http://www.premierinn.com/en/checkHotel ... ston-north
Old Duncombe House http://oldeduncombehouse.co.uk/

Camping
The nearest campsite is <15mins drive away at Wyreside Farm Park http://www.wyresidefarmpark.co.uk/
Slightly further afield there are a range of campsites you can try

Other
There are two major towns close-by. Both of which have too many hotels and hostels to count.
• Preston is 20min drive away
• Lancaster is 30mins drive away

Blackpool is also very close (25mins away) but it is technically another planet...

Any questions: get in touch with Chris (chris@catchthespirit.co.uk), me (jmartin@myerscough.ac.uk) or Ali at (alison.northrop@anglia.ac.uk).

More details to follow soon !

Should be coming down from Edinburgh for this one.

Anybody want to split a twin room at one of the nearby hotels for the Friday and Saturday night? Looks like it should be about £30 pp pn.

Del's in, sorry Mark.

The Premier Inn is currently just £100 for a twin for the Friday and Saturday night, so £25 per person per night.

Says he who was clearly wearing a Discraft hat at Loch Tay. As well as out right disagreeing with Matt, the pedant in me asks what about the UltraStar?

Would you like me to write you a letter of support ?

Reasons to come to the Hotshot (use these as back-up):
The Lakes are less than an hour away (home of Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter)
Forest of Bowland is next door - everyone goes to the Lakes and therefore Bowland beautiful and quiet
The home of Sticky Toffee Pudding (Cartmel) is close
Wigan is sufficiently far away
Blackpool (City of dreams  ) is also very close - if the wind is blowing in the right direction, you can smell the fake tan...
We make great cheese - who doesn't like great cheese ?

Good luck with your pow-wow !

Update:

For those of you who are not on Facebook - here is one of the videos that some of my student team have been making, all in aid of spreading the word about the Hotshot. Just click the black square below - it was taken in winter!
Image

In other news - the course will involve throwing across a river. Our challenge was to get 50+ players across the river without getting their toes wet. The answer is artificial/removable stepping stones!

Here is the crossing point - very pretty (River Brock)
Image

Barrel section goes in and filled with river gravel
Image

... then topped off with river sand
Image

it works! Each one has about 50kg of gravel inside - they don't move so even the Masters division can get across safely.
ImageIMAG0639

To remove, we just lift the barrel out....

ImageIMAG0643

A quick kick of the gravel pile.... and nothing is left. Win.

Another video will follow shortly !

When faced with the task of building an extra 9 holes.... never let brambles and a couple of branches get in the way of a good line. (I must add - we decided very carefully and pruned only what was necessary).

Click the black square below :)

There was a digit wrong on the account details on the invite and 'thanks for registering' page. This has now been corrected. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Tourney discs arrived yesterday. Everything shaping up nicely!

Hi all,

An update for places to stay.

Currently Lancaster University are offering single en-suite rooms for the Saturday night (20th June) at £37 per night (including breakfast!). Annoyingly, the Friday night is fully booked.

If you are interested - there is an online booking system here:

https://www.conferences.lancs.ac.uk/bedandbreakfast/

The University is 25mins away from the course.
