Hi everyone
As part of the BDGA Comms revamp, we have started a new Calendar aimed at everyone who wishes to play DG in the UK. Its only been up and running for a couple of days but I feel is looking good.

Go have a look at https://tockify.com/bdgacalendar and let me know what you think.

If you have an event that you and your club would like to have included please fill out the following form

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1EaVIy3 ... 4/viewform

Hope you find it useful... I am hoping that this will go onto the website too

New BDGA Calendar
https://tockify.com/bdgacalendar
As some will have seen the new BDGA Calendar is up and running . I have decided to use a free piece of software that offers an easy interface for me to input your events and one that is very adaptable to search from the end users point of view. It is also possible that the BDGA website as well as other club site can also embed it.
Here is an overview of my observations about the procedure so far (3 days in!)
HOW TO GET YOUR EVENT INTO THE CALENDAR:
simply fill in the GoogleDocs form here
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1EaVIy3 ... 4/viewform
I will then endeavour to get the calendar updated within 24 hours (although prob a lot sooner)
Searching using Tags
I intend to keep a smooth connection throughout the calendar with the use of Tags.
This means that if a player comes to the calendar and wants to see all Tour Events, he'll be able to hit the tag and filter only TourEvents to view.
TAGS CURRENTLY USED:

TourEvents ClubRounds Saturdays Sundays SEMDGS
CroydonDGC HantsandBerks BedworthDGC QuarryParkDGC
Beginners Newbies MonthlyHandicap
Im sure that there will be more tags as we go... each club will have its own tag

Search using date. I am aware that the calendar can look pretty cluttered, purely due to the number of events that are up there, but the end user can fine tune the search by filtering the dates that they want to search and play. They will get all the events coutrywide for that date. simples.

You can also share each individual event on a variety of different platforms.

So please let me know your thoughts.

I'm not sure it needs to have every weekly round on there from every club. Surely things like that are better organised through FB etc? What happens if the rounds are rained off or something? at least through facebook people can adjust times slighlty or let others know about changes. It just makes it look too busy as it is and it only has 2-3 clubs regular rounds on it so far... times this by 3 and it will be chaotic.

That's the point steve. This is aimed at everyone. If you are looking to play a round and you're not affiliated to a club or you're in a different part of the country, you can check the calendar and filter out what you don't want. Having everything there will give you choice. Also if you go into the events you will see that , for club rounds, you are advised to check the relevant facebook pages to see if said club rounds are happenening. I know it looks busy but that is kinda the point

Can there not just be a bit on the side that lists the weekly rounds? rather than posting it up over and over again 52 times on a calender? At a glance it looks more like the CDGC calender than a BDGA calender. Too much info dilutes the rest out in my opinion.

It is busy, but I think it's a good resource for people to find what's going on, be they visiting foreigners, new players or whatever.

What it really needs is a 'DG near me' tool to use in conjunction, so you'd enter your postcode and it gives you a list of venues in ascending distance order, along with the calendar tag for that club ideally hyperlinked to take you to the filtered calendar view.

I've just been looking at store locator tools and the first example I found £50 gets you 200 configurable 'stores' available for up to 1000 lookups, I think that's an investable solution at our budget size, and could potentially double as a course directory

It only looks like a croydon calendar because it's 3 days old... Once other clubs get theirs on the calendar it will stretch it out

Personally I think this is a great as I for one quite often think about taking trips to other venues so this would help me see what's going for all clubs to help decide where to go.

I've also used the event submission form and testify to its ease of use.

Good job all round Rich as far as I'm concerned :)

I think it's a great start, too. Well done Rich.

It's bang-on that each event it tagged. That provides the necessary scope for users to filter what they want to see. Steve's point the list might appear overwhelming is valid, but providing the right type of filtration immediately avoids this being a problem.

The first thing users will look for is a way to remove from view events not of interest to them. Users don't want to have to look for the search option and type in tag names manually, they just want a list of tags to click or tap on to filter what's important to them. Could you provide this functionality with the tags please?

WRT the tags, I suggest avoiding a lot of bother in the future by adopting simple groupings now and planning what tags should be in them. If the tags are just added organically as and when with no underlying structure there will be frustrating crossover and confusion (both things that will cause users to avoid using the calendar).

What groups might work? For consistency, ease of use, and ease of comparison, I think each event should be listed with one tag from each the following 4 categories:

1 Location e.g. London, Essex, Warwickshire, Northumberland, Lothian, Strathclyde etc
With the exception of 'London' go by county/region for now. At this point Location does not need to be too specific, but it can get more specific when required as more events are added in future.
2 Type e.g. Club Round, Club Tournament, Regional Tournament, National Tournament
These four should cover all eventualities. Don't make this any more specific, that's less helpful at this stage.
3 Skill level: Beginner friendly, or All levels
We welcome all levels of player to all events, and sometimes events are particularly suited to beginners.
4 Club: Croydon, QP, Essex etc

Agree Jester. I have already got a common thread going through the tags of all of the posts in prep for the use of tags for filtration. I will add these 4 items to the regular use plus a few other separators Saturdays,Sunday's are two that I like ... Clears out a large swath if you can only play one day. I also like the logos for a very quick indicator.

Nice, Rich, it's looking good. I agree the logos are great to have, and the Sat/Sun differentiator is a useful tag too. Could you cover all eventualities if you had Saturday, Sunday, Weekend, and Midweek?

- One-day weekend events would be tagged either Saturday or Sunday
- Two-day weekend events that require playing both days (e.g. Nationals) would be tagged Weekend
- Two-day weekend events that the player could also play one day at (e.g Tour event) would tagged Weekend, Saturday and Sunday
- Midweek events (e.g. a Summer League) would be tagged Midweek

Sweet, this is going to be really helpful. Can you get it on the homepage of the BDGA site please?

Cool, yeah, if it could be made availalbe as a widget that any site or club page could use that would be excellent.
