BDGA #6 CROYDON CYCLONE & BRITISH OPEN 18-19 MAY 2013

Post by LostMeow » Sun Mar 24, 2013 8:15 pm

Croydon Disc Golf Club is pleased to host the Croydon Cyclone on the weekend of May 18th/19th 2013
Lloyd Park Disc Golf Course, Croydon
Tournament Director – Tom Lowes
Assistant Tournament Director – Dan Ryan

British Open!

This year the Croydon Cyclone is also the British Open! That means you get to play for the honour of being British Open Champion as well as Croydon Cyclone Champion. Additionally, this event will be used to determine which British player will get the opportunity to play in the Performance Flight at the USDGC (http://www.usdgc.com/). This element is 'opt in' but is open to all players with a PDGA rating. You should only enter the performance side-competition if you intend to accept the offer to travel and play in the USDGC. All players will be given a 'performance target', based on player rating. The best performance against that target will win the place.

********************************************************

One day on... 348 views of this thread, 11 registrations...

Strong preference for 4 rounds of 18 so far... if you're keen on finals, you'd better get your registration (and your vote!) in before the early deadline of May 1st!

Tom, if I may ask, what time will the cafe start serving breakfasts...???

I'm just hoping to not get caught up in the last minute 'rush' before Players' meetings, etc.

:D

Please and Thank You!

Hi Steve,

the cafe will be serving breakfasts from 0830 and we will give players plenty of time to have breakfast before players' meetings and/or start of play.

Registration Update!

Thanks to all those that have registered so far! (List of players below)

The pre-event reserved Star Destroyers have now sold out - however, there may be one or two more available on the day of the event. Thanks to all those who pre-ordered.

The event format vote is still a close race...

Remember you have the chance to add your vote if you register before May 1st!

Am looking to book a return train ticket, but have no idea of format and thus possible finish time this year.
Can anyone (Tom?) possibly suggest a time when things might be finished, or at the very least what the format will be and what the Sun afternoon start time will be, so that I can calculate which train would be safest to book, please?
(Travelling north, need to book, prices get steeper day-by-day, so swiftest possible response much appreciated!)
Thanks in advance

Hi BOF,

I can't confirm the format until May 1st which is the deadline for the voting.

A tentative estimate is that if we have a 4-round format, the very latest we should be finished on the Sunday is 1730.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Can anyone tell me which British Open this will be please? e.g. is it the 17th, 18th etc? I've been through all my records and can't find anything that answers the question.

Thanks in advance.

Hey all

Here is the work-in-progress course map for the 35th British Open and 6th Croydon Cyclone. What's new? A few tweaks to keep it all interesting. :)

As ever please comment, ask questions and tell us what you think so we can make this the best tournament you'll play in.

#1 - Over the winter a mature tree on the right of the gap fell down. This opened things up a little so the tee has moved back 11y on the same line. Happily this has meant the hole is now naturally a fairer challenge so no need for the old artificial OB pond anymore.

#7 - Lots of discussion about this hole. Open players saying it was too short and not challenging enough, Ams saying it was too difficult to get the drive in bounds. We've listened, the Croydon players have all knocked around ideas for amending and here is the result. The tee has been moved back and right (hole lengthens from 141y to 175y). The OB line has been swung around to the right of the tee so the whole fairway is now in-bounds. The fairway up by the basket has been narrowed, the line now follows the left path at the fork rather than the right. Finally the DZ has been moved back 20y.

What does all this mean to how it plays? Well, if you don't want to attack the hole, three 60 yard controlled shots will give you a 4 every time. If you want to attack, you'll need to be much more accurate off the tee to land anywhere that sights the basket for your second. The narrower landing strip brings the trees short and left of the basket into play more and the new tee position means there is no hyzer line drive out over the OB. To go that way needs a flex drive that'll fade back in-bounds, and if you do find yourself OB and thus and new further-back DZ saving a 4 will be a bigger ask...

I've included a sketch on a satellite pic to better illustrate how last year's design (in orange) has evolved into this years' (in red). Get thinking, folks. This'll be a tester!

#8 DZ has been repositioned meaning it now shoots straight at the OB behind the basket.

#16 Unfortunately the magnificent Hangman's tree was dangerous and was taken down before it fell down. The remaining stump (left apparently because of a woodpecker nesting in it) is about 10m high. This provides us with a really clear mando to play around.

So - what do you think of the course?
