3x18 & 1x9 for all + 9 hole finals

Post by Jester » Mon Jun 05, 2006 7:55 am

A new format was run at the Kingsland Classic Tour event over the weekend. Everyone played 3x18 as usual, then there was a 9 hole round for everyone before the 9 hole finals for the top Ams and Open players.

If you were there what did you think of this?

As far as I'm concerned, the jury is still out on this one. It took only a little longer for a group of three players to complete the K Classic 18, as it did for a group of four to play the final round 9 (longer) holes.
 Why not give TDs a choice:
1. 3 x 18, plus 9 hole finals (and a Sunday morning start at 10am, allowing for a late Saturday night), or
2. 4 x 18, plus 5 hole finals (with an early Sunday morning tee off at 8am).
With an efficiently run event, either format should finish by 4.30pm (inc prizes).
Hammer time!

I like the 3 x 18 still. It was lots of hard work to setup the new 9 from a organisers point of view (with the time constraints) and as angus said it took almost as long to play (maybe the course was a factor in this).

Personally 3 x 18 is more than enough golf for me over 2 days and I prefer a nice late social on the saturday :)

So much golf my arm still aches from the weekend and I can't throw a disc at the moment. :( or was that lifting 36 baskets over the weekend to various places..... :)

I honestly don't think 4*18 is feasible except at shorter, well manicured courses (eg QP). There are inevitably lost discs, groups of novices/juniors etc that result in a group returning later than planned.

The extra 9 format seems feasible, but playing an extended 9 would seem to have been a mistake. The 9 eventually played in the final would maybe have been better, but as this was a pilot, it is to be expected that there were teething problems. With hindsight, I feel the 9 should be a sequencing selection from the 18, rather than extended holes. That would reduce the overhead for the organisers too.

It remains to be seen if the format is acceptable when there are more players. If we'd had 50 players, 10 groups of 5 with a queue on one tee, even a shorter 9 may have taken too long. It certainly isn't sustainable in the long term, with 60+ players.

The fact remains that there has been demand for more golf at one event only, by a couple of non-touring local players who only play a couple of events a year. It's not particularly surprising that they wanted to get the maximum golf possible out of their weekend, and that they weren't worried about what time they got home! As it happened, they played an extra round amongst themselves, as we'd suggested, so they got their wish, even if it wasn't officially counted towards scores.

I am still in favor of the 3 x 18 + finals. It is a personal preference obviously. Luckily though it does make since in that there are no problems accomodating bigger fields. I think the format allows plenty of golf to played and is easier to run from a TD stand point as well.
Frolf it up!!!!
