apperley cricket club disc golf championship on sunday

Post by mat cutler » Thu Aug 04, 2011 11:05 am

Short notice... but I've been working with this small village cricket club for a while and going to run a little dg tournament around the cricket ground and surrounding farmers field.

if anyone is free on sunday and around the gloucester / tewkesbury area here is the fb event invite...

we'll have 7 travellers and 1 full basket, so if anyone could bring another we could then have 9 holes - if not I'll have a tonal set up.

lovely ground with a bar and bar b q after!

This was truly an amazing day and an amazing course, potentially to go semi-permanent in the off cricket season. well done to Mat for finding this place and putting it on.

Now on to the course...

Hole 1- a simple 70 metre hole over a fence to land in bounds, playing into the wind made it challenging to land close.

Hole 2- another short hole downhill with a big oak tree to go around with some interested cows making it weary to go low, good hyzer shot to land by the basket.

Hole 3- a good lengthed hole uphill and on a slope to give you something to think about if you wanted to land close.

Hole 4- a nice short hole with an OB pond in the middle and the basket a little beyond, easy to hit a stright shot, also easy to go for a hyzer bomb round the oak tree on the right but the wind made it tricky all round.

Hole 5- a chance to open up the arm for a big open 120/130 metre par 4 with the basket parked behind a big oak tree, again the tailwind here made it tricky to approach.

Hole 6- a nice hole with basket parked by a tree, cross winds making it difficult to land a sidearm close and the tree blocking the hyzer route, had to think here.

Hole 7- a short and simple, very open hole, but howling headwinds made it difficult to land close.

Hole 8- loved by all today, playing into the practice nets of the cricket ground itself, playing along a fence line which had to be crossed with winding puushing most high shots OB.

Hole 9- playing out from the cricket nets so a straight shot required at the start and then a hard turn to the right with strong cross winds throwing discs away from the basket.

Hole 10- a nice and short pitch up to the basket but again into the wind.

Hole 11- the final hole with an island green and island fairway with about 5 metres inbetween OB, Mat Cutler opened everyones eyes when he nearly had a skip ace, skipping OB with a drop in for OB 3, very easy way to play the hole and chance of an ace.

With a well stocked bar on site and good facilities this is definitely wirth looking at for a tour event with more course layout opportunities.

Thanks very much to Rowan and Apperley cricket club along with Matt for getting this going, really enjoyable afternoon out playing a challenging little 11 hole course, with each shot making you think. It was intersting to see the way Matt went about a number of the holes seeing lines and oppurtunities the rest of us didn't immediately click, especially with the cricket nets, where none of the rest of us realised the two meter rule wasn't in play so on top was no problem.

Definite oppurtunity for some one dayers here with perfect facilities for a two day event in the cricket off season.

The course we played used the cricket club itself plus the immediate farmers fields, Rowan was pretty sure a few more of the fields with more points of interest (hills/trees) could also be available.

The well stocked bar and barbecue pit would also make it one hell of a social event!

thanks for making the effort to come down guys.

good day indeed.

I'm back up there in a couple of weeks as they are hosting the lashings XI cricket team (old pro's on a charity circuit) there will be 500+ people there for the game and I'm hoping to do a demo during the tea interval I'll also have a couple of holes set up in the back field so people can have a go. Should be good promo.

Rowan and I will be installing 5 metal tonal holes so the kids can play whenever, also he is planning to get a few more travellers with some profits from the lashings. should get 9 hole course of sorts.

On the way out I stopped in and took a look around the farm opposite with the campsite on, perfect for a another 9 holes. hills and trees, amazing views of cheltenham and gloucester!

watch this space for tournament in 2012...

Had a good day out, and loads of scope for a good tourney, changing and shower facilities, bar, meeting room, and a gruop of volenteers used to catering for sports teams, camp site the other side of the road and a large group of surrounding fields as well as a cricket pitch. could have same potential as kingsland classic course when i first toured. :)
